What are they feeding on? Which fly to use to catch Provo River trout on a consistent basis? This fishing report for the Provo River should teach you some tricks to getting more fish to the net. Observation is the best key to matching the hatch. The movements of the trout towards it’s prey can tell you exactly what fly to use. Try hanging out a bit before sending your first cast into the river. Where are the trout holding? On the bottom? Middle of the water column? Near the surface? I hope you brought your polarized sunglasses because with out them you won’t be seeing much under the surface.
Next, observe the trout and their movements. Are they rushing forward to grab things? Are they rolling on the bottom feeding on scuds in the weeds? Are they sipping on the surface? Crashing the surface? All of these things are clues as to what fly will match the hatch. Reading a fishing report for the Provo River should give you an idea of what is going on, but will not tell you what the fish are doing on any particular day.
The main food sources for Provo River trout include; sow bugs, mayflies, caddis flies, midges. To a lesser degree, there are stones, leeches, Drakes and a whole host of others that I won’t list.
