What kind of fishing gear do I need?
A 5, 6 or 7 weight fly rod will do just fine. We typically use floating fly line. All flies, leaders, weights and indicators are provided free of charge. Waders with felt soled boots are the best. If you do not have equipment, everything is available for rent for a small fee.
What if I want to use my spinning rod?
No problem. The regulations are: fly or artificial lure only. NO BAIT! 2 Brown trout under 15 inches per angler can be kept for your dining pleasure. The word is that the Utah Department of Natural Resources want people to keep some fish to control the population. There are a ton of fish in The Provo River.
What should I wear?
Dress warm. Layer like you were going skiing or snowboarding. Good quality socks, long underwear, comfy pants, a couple of layers on top, a good hat and above all, glasses. Preferably, polarized sunglasses. If it is cloudy and or dark you will need some type of glasses on at all times while fishing. Your guide will always have extras, both sunglasses and clear safety glasses.
Where will we fish?
Most days we fish The Provo River. It has miles of river divided into the upper, middle and the lower Provo. We can target lunkers or small creek size fish. Each section of the Provo has its’ pluses and minuses. We can tell you what is fishing the best and where the least amount of pressure is on any given day. Some sections are very scenic, the Timpanogas mountain range in the distance and no people to speak of, or you can pull some huge fish from right behind a shopping center in downtown Provo. You can discuss your needs and wants with your guide and come up with a game plan to having a great time fishing!
How much do I tip?
The typical tip for your guide should be in the neighborhood of 20% of your total. They work hard for you, reward them.
Why do I have to wear glasses to fish?
Safety! A fish hook in the body or finger is one thing… We are all equipped to take care of that easily. In the eye is something that we want to avoid at all costs. No exceptions! No glasses, no fishing. Thank you!
What if I have never fly fished before?
Novice fly fishers get a quick lesson in casting prior to going to the river. No pressure, no problem, it’s not rocket science. We will have you hooking fish in no time… A guided trip is actually a great way to skip the often frustrating learning curve required to become an effective fisherman or woman.
What are my options for guided trips?
Fishing is best at different spots at different times of the year. You have the choice of fishing the Weber River, Middle Provo River, Lower Provo River or any of our local reservoirs in our personal pontoon boats. Each boat has an electric trolling motor and is very comfortable fishing. All river fishing is performed by wading as drifting in a boat and fishing in these waters does not improve your catch rate. Strawberry Reservoir holds some huge Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. At certain times of the year it is insane (30+ fish per day)!
